Marvel, Disney give superhero treatment to Riverdale teen for organizing free community wash days

We’d like to congratulate our Riverdale student and star, Jayera Griffin for being recognized by Marvel, Disney for her community efforts!

“Jayera Griffin, 16, of Riverdale has inspired others by raising funds and holding free community wash days at a local laundromat since 2018. Jayera is now a Marvel comic superhero and featured in a Disney show.

The sophomore at Thornton High School in Harvey is the subject of an episode of “Marvel’s Hero Project.” Her episode, “Radiant Jayera,” debuted Friday on the recently launched Disney+ online streaming service. A subscription is needed to view the episode.

“Here at Marvel, superheroes are inspired by real-life heroes,” a narrator says in a video trailer for the show. “So the editors of the best-known Marvel comics have come together to work on a project about children doing the extraordinary.”

Jayera is among 20 young people nationwide featured because of how they have helped others overcome disabilities or other challenges. A film crew captured footage of her at school and in her neighborhood about a year ago, she said. However, she didn’t learn the extent of the project until a reveal event in June.

Jayera’s story also was given graphic-novel treatment in a short comic.

Jayera has received a lot of attention since her first free wash day in April 2018 as a way of satisfying community service requirements for the National Junior Honor Society. She recently appeared on “The Tamron Hall Show” and “Windy City Live” with other “Hero Project” honorees to talk about their service.”
