Prescription Drug Disposal

Prescription Drug Disposal

The Village of Riverdale and Cook County Sheriff’s Department have partnered to offer an easy solution for residents and neighboring communities for deposit of expired or unused medications. The Riverdale Police Department has been designated as a secured site for turning in expired or unused prescription and over-the-counter medications. The drop off container is located in the lobby of the Police Department and is available 24 hours a day.

The container is monitored via video surveillance cameras.

How to prepare items for disposal:

  • All Prescribed medications to be disposed of should be contained inside their original bottle or placed inside a small sealed container (i.e plastic bottle) or zip-lock bag.
  • Personal information should be removed or marked out with a permanent marker.

Items that DEA regulations allow to be disposed of:

  • Over the counter medications
  • Prescription Medications
  • Prescription Patches
  • Prescription Ointments
  • Vitamins
  • Pet medicines

You may NOT drop off:

  • Hydrogen-peroxide
  • Compressed cylinders or aerosols (e.g, asthma inhalers)
  • Iodine - containing medications
  • Thermometers
  • Alcohol & ilicit drugs (i.e marijuana, heroin, LSD, etc.)
